Can drones film indoors? (Yes!)

I never thought I’d be flying a drone inside of a whale skeleton, and yet, here we are.

Thanks to the Nantucket Historical Association, I was able to take my small DJI Spark quadcopter for a (controlled) spin near their main Sperm Whale Exhibit earlier this month.

Weighing in at just 0.2 lbs, the DJI Spark may not have great battery life, but it does fit into tough crevices. It’s also one of the most affordable drones for filmmakers, as it “only” costs $399 without extra batteries or an improved remote controller.

Then there’s the old filmmaker’s dilemma: The FAA doesn’t let you film commercially outdoors without a Part 107 Drone Pilot License. For those without a license, hopefully this video shows that you can still get cinematic shots from your drone indoors, at least in the right circumstances.

Just remember to fly slow and steady, and to get as much light as possible in your shot.

Also, you’ll need to get permission from the owner of the building (obviously).
